Star Trek: The Animated Series really is a continuation of the Original Series and it tan in the earliest 70s. It included the voices of the actors who played Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura and Sulu. One noticeable exception is that Chekov does not appear.
How does this series stand up? Well the animation is what you would expect from the 70s. It reminds me a lot of the Superfriends cartoons that ran around the same time.
The stories are of the same style as the Original Series, sometimes continuing themes and plots from that first series. They are kind of campy, some so cheesy to be painful but others having the same charm that made Star Trek a classic.
If you are a Star Trek fan, it is worth watching. At one time the Animated Series was considered "canon," that is the stories were considered a part of the main Star Trek timeline as found in the Original Series, Next Generation and others.
That was eventually changed, but the impact is still there. It is in this series that we first find out that the T in James T. Kirk stands for Tiberius. It is in this series as well that we first meet Robert April, former captain of the Enterprise, someone mentioned recently in Star Trek: Discovery.
Star Trek: The Animated Series is a fun watch and a return to simpler times.
