Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Review

Last Jedi
In anticipation of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I heard reactions from others that ranged from best Star Wars movie ever to the worst. I would disagree with both reactions.

I enjoyed The Last Jedi. It was visually very well done. The special effects we see in these movies make it hard to go back and watch A New Hope. The fight scenes were amazing, both the individual battles and the space battles. As always, the Millennium Falcon was impressive with its fights and flights.

The story starts off where The Force Awakens ended. Rey had tracked Luke Skywalker and she attempts to get him to return and help the resistance.  At the end of the last movie, the First Order had attempted to destroy the resistance on the planet they were based on. Although they failed in that attempt, they knew where the resistance were and so now they attempt to destroy them with more conventional weapons.

Much of the movie is about Kylo Ren and Rey as they attempt to discover their destiny. Both are strong with the force, dangerously strong. How did Ren become what he became? What will Rey become? The movie investigates these themes.

Just as The Force Awakens echoed A New Hope, The Last Jedi echoes The Empire Strikes Back. That's not a bad thing as The Empire Strikes Back is one of the best Star Wars movies.

It was a fun and action-packed movie. But it wasn't perfect. I still found Snoke to be an uninteresting villain. I was hoping to get some background on Snoke, something to explain his origins and motives. But nothing was offered.

I also felt that they tried too hard to insert humour into the movie. At times it felt like they were trying to imitate a Marvel superhero movie. There were some genuine funny moments, but often it seemed forced.

Over all, The Last Jedi was a good movie. No doubt, it is a huge hit. But I will confess that I actually enjoyed Justice League more, even though Justice League is considered a flop.
